Why Visit

St Paul’s Church is one of Bedford’s most important historic buildings, standing prominently in the heart of St Paul’s Square. There has been a church on this site for more than 1,200 years, while much of the present building dates from the 15th century. Its impressive architecture, large stained-glass windows, historic roof and ornate interior make it well worth stepping inside.

The church has played an important role in Bedford’s history. John Bunyan preached here in 1656, while John Wesley delivered his famous Assize Sermon from the pulpit in 1758. During the Second World War, the BBC also used the church’s Trinity Chapel to broadcast its Daily Service across Britain and Europe.

St Paul’s is still a working church, but visitors are welcome to explore the building, appreciate its architecture and discover its history. The church regularly hosts concerts, organ recitals, exhibitions and other events, giving visitors another reason to return.

Its position makes it particularly easy to include in a day exploring Bedford. St Paul’s Square is close to the High Street, Bedford Corn Exchange, shops, cafés and the River Great Ouse, so a visit can easily be combined with other attractions in the town centre.

For anyone interested in Bedford’s history, architecture, religion or simply discovering one of the town’s most impressive landmarks, St Paul’s Church is well worth visiting. It is a peaceful and fascinating place in the centre of Bedford, with centuries of local and national history contained within its walls.
