Mead Open Farm is a fantastic family day out in Bedfordshire, combining farm animals, hands-on experiences, outdoor adventure and a huge indoor play area. Set across 30 acres in Billington, near Leighton Buzzard, it has been welcoming families since 1994 and has grown into one of the area’s best-known farm attractions.
The farm is home to a wide variety of animals, including sheep, cows, pigs, goats, rabbits, ponies, ducks, chickens and alpacas. Children can get involved with activities such as hand-feeding goats and sheep, grooming ponies and meeting smaller animals, making the experience much more interactive than simply viewing animals from a distance.
There is also plenty to keep children active. Outdoor attractions include the SkyTrail aerial obstacle course, climbing wall, jumping pillows, go-karts, crazy golf, Topsy Turvy Towers, Digger Village, sand and water play and Shaggy’s Pirate Ship. Younger visitors have their own SkyTykes course and Mini Moo’s under-five play area.
Weather is less of a concern thanks to Shaggy’s PlayWorld, a large indoor play area with slides, climbing structures and other activities. This makes Mead Open Farm particularly useful for a family day out when the British weather is unpredictable, while the combination of indoor and outdoor attractions means there is enough variety to keep children occupied for several hours.
Seasonal events add another reason to return throughout the year, with activities ranging from Easter and summer events to Halloween and Christmas experiences. During the summer, for example, the farm runs additional activities including water play, zorbing, silent discos and foam parties.
For families visiting from Bedford and the surrounding area, Mead Open Farm is well worth the journey. It offers the combination of animals, play, adventure and hands-on activities that makes it easy to spend a full day here, with food, drinks, picnic areas and free parking also available on site.
