Stewartby Water Sports Club
Just a 15-minute drive from Bedford, Stewartby Water Sports Club is one of the largest and most diverse watersports clubs in the region. Set on a stunning 200-acre lake in the heart of the Forest of Marston Vale, the volunteer-run club has been introducing people to life on the water since 1971. Whether you’re interested in sailing, wakeboarding, powerboat racing or simply enjoying a day beside the lake, Stewartby offers something for all ages and abilities.
Unlike commercial watersports centres, Stewartby operates as a membership club, creating a welcoming community where beginners can learn alongside experienced enthusiasts. The club is divided into four main sections: sailing, wakesports, powerboating and angling, each with its own programme of training, competitions and social events.
Things to Do
Sailing
The sailing section welcomes complete beginners through to experienced racers. As an RYA-affiliated training centre, members can take recognised sailing courses, join weekly racing or simply enjoy recreational sailing on one of Bedfordshire’s best inland lakes.
Wakeboarding & Water Skiing
Stewartby is well known for its wakeboarding and water skiing community. Members can enjoy wakeboarding, water skiing, kneeboarding, monoskiing and slalom skiing, with coaching available from qualified instructors. Junior development programmes help younger riders build their skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Powerboat Racing
Few clubs in the UK can boast an active circuit powerboat racing section. Stewartby regularly hosts national competitions while also providing opportunities for members to get involved in racing, safety crews and boat handling.
Angling
The lake also supports a thriving coarse fishing section, with designated swims around the shoreline and boat fishing available to members throughout the year.
Facilities
Members benefit from excellent on-site facilities including:
- Clubhouse overlooking the lake
- Licensed bar and galley serving food and drinks
- Modern changing rooms and hot showers
- Secure boat and equipment storage
- Camping during selected events
- Large lakeside social area with beautiful views across the water
A Great Place to Learn
One of Stewartby’s biggest strengths is its friendly atmosphere. Many members first joined with no previous watersports experience, and the club regularly organises taster sessions, training courses and coaching days to help newcomers get started. Families are especially well catered for, with youth sailing and wakesports programmes running throughout the season.
Visitor Information
