Why Visit

The Embankment Riverside Walk is one of Bedford’s most attractive outdoor spaces, following the River Great Ouse through the heart of the town. The tree-lined promenade stretches for around a mile and offers a relaxing way to see some of Bedford’s best-known riverside landmarks.

There is plenty to see along the route, including historic bridges, the Victorian bandstand, colourful flower displays and Bedford’s impressive war memorial. You can also watch rowing boats, wildlife and river activity as you walk, with plenty of benches and open areas where you can simply sit and enjoy the view.

It is a particularly good choice for families, walkers, runners and cyclists, with parks and attractions including Russell Park and The Longholme nearby. There are also cafés, pubs and restaurants along the riverside, making it easy to stop for a coffee, lunch or drink during your walk.

The Embankment is also the setting for some of Bedford’s biggest events, most notably the Bedford River Festival, when the riverside comes alive with boat races, parades, live entertainment, food stalls and family activities.

For visitors to Bedford, the Embankment is one of the easiest ways to experience the town at its best. It is free to enjoy, close to the town centre and combines beautiful river views, green space, history and plenty of places to stop along the way.
