Paws, Parks & Pints: The Best Dog-Friendly Days Out in Bedford

Let’s be honest—if you’ve got a dog, leaving them at home while you head out for the day is guaranteed to earn you that look when you get back.

The good news? Bedford is a brilliant place for dog owners. Whether your four-legged friend loves chasing squirrels (unsuccessfully), splashing in puddles or simply sniffing absolutely everything in sight, there are plenty of places to enjoy together.

Here are a few of our favourites.

Priory Country Park

If Bedford has a paradise for dogs, this is probably it.

With lakes, woodland, open fields and miles of walking trails, Priory Country Park is somewhere your dog could happily spend hours exploring. There are plenty of routes to choose from, meaning no two walks have to be the same, and there’s enough open space to burn off even the most energetic spaniel or Labrador.

Just don’t expect to leave without muddy paws if it’s been raining.

Bedford Embankment

Sometimes the simplest walks are the best.

The Embankment offers beautiful views along the River Great Ouse and is perfect for a leisurely stroll before stopping for a coffee. Head further along the riverside and you’ll find quieter stretches where both you and your dog can escape the hustle and bustle of the town centre.

It’s one of Bedford’s greatest assets, and it’s right on our doorstep.

Bedford Park

Looking for somewhere close to town?

Bedford Park is ideal for an after-work walk or a weekend wander. Wide open spaces, tree-lined paths and plenty of other friendly dogs make it one of the town’s most popular green spaces.

Fair warning though—your dog may insist on saying hello to every other dog they meet.

Dog-Friendly Cafés and Pubs

After all that exercise, you’ve earned a coffee… and your dog has definitely earned a biscuit (according to them).

More and more cafés and pubs across Bedford are welcoming well-behaved dogs, often with water bowls, treats and plenty of fuss from the staff. There’s nothing better than finding somewhere you can both relax after a long walk.

We’re busy adding dog-friendly venues to Visit Bedford, making it easier than ever to find somewhere that welcomes the whole family—including the furry members.

Looking Beyond Bedford

One of the best things about living here is how quickly you can reach beautiful countryside.

Within a short drive you’ll find woodland walks, country parks, nature reserves and picturesque villages that make perfect destinations for a weekend adventure.

Help Us Build Bedford’s Best Dog Guide

We’re on a mission to make Visit Bedford the go-to guide for dog owners.

We’ll be adding more walks, cafés, pubs, accommodation and attractions that welcome dogs over the coming months. If you know a hidden gem—or if you own a dog-friendly business—we’d love to hear from you.

After all, no one knows Bedford’s best dog walks better than the people who use them every day.

Now grab the lead, don’t forget the poo bags, and let your four-legged tour guide decide where you’re heading next.

  • Like many families in Bedford, we often found ourselves asking the same question at the weekend: “What shall we do today?” With young children, we’re always looking for somewhere new to explore, whether that’s a park, café, family attraction, museum, riverside walk or somewhere to grab lunch afterwards. Time and again, we’d type “things to…
