The Flying Horse

The Flying Horse is particularly appealing if you want a pub that feels like a destination rather than simply somewhere to stop for a drink. Its converted-barn setting gives it plenty of character, while the modern dining areas, fireplaces and outdoor spaces create a comfortable environment for everything from a casual lunch to a more substantial evening meal.

The pub also makes good use of its location. It sits directly on The Green in the centre of Clophill and is surrounded by the countryside of the Maulden, Warren and Clophill Woods. The Greensand Ridge Walk and Greensand Cycle Way pass through the village, making the Flying Horse a particularly good place to finish a countryside walk with food or a drink.

For outdoor visits, there is a sizeable beer garden and courtyard, while the pub is also dog-friendly and accommodates larger groups and private functions. Its combination of food, outdoor space and countryside surroundings makes it well suited to families, groups, walkers and relaxed meals.

Location: The Flying Horse is in Clophill rather than Bedford itself, around 8–9 miles south-west of Bedford town centre, so it is roughly a 20–25 minute drive, depending on traffic. That does mean it is less convenient than a town-centre pub, but the countryside setting is arguably one of its main attractions. It works particularly well as a destination pub if you’re happy to make the short drive out of Bedford.

Overall, it is a strong choice for a proper countryside pub experience close to Bedford—particularly if you want good food, a pleasant setting and the option to combine your visit with a walk around Clophill and the surrounding countryside.
