Royal & Derngate Theatre Northampton

Royal & Derngate is one of the region’s leading arts and entertainment venues, located in the heart of Northampton. The complex brings together two main theatres, the Royal and Derngate, alongside the Underground Studio and Northampton Filmhouse, creating a varied programme of live entertainment and cinema under one roof.

The programme covers a huge range of entertainment, including West End and touring musicals, drama, comedy, dance, live music, family shows, pantomime and special events. With productions changing throughout the year, there is usually something to suit different ages and interests, whether you are looking for a big night out or a family-friendly performance.

Families are particularly well catered for, with children’s theatre, holiday activities, workshops and family performances forming part of the programme. Upcoming productions include shows such as The Gruffalo, What The Ladybird Heard At Christmas and the annual pantomime, alongside activities designed to encourage children and young people to get involved with the arts.

The venue also offers plenty for adults, from major touring productions and musicals to stand-up comedy, dance, concerts and talks. Recent and upcoming programmes feature performers and productions ranging from Russell Howard and Phil Wang to major dance companies and touring theatre productions, meaning a visit can be anything from a traditional theatre evening to a comedy night or live music experience.

Another attraction is the Northampton Filmhouse, which forms part of the complex and shows a mixture of mainstream, independent, British and international films. This makes Royal & Derngate more than simply a theatre and provides another option when planning an evening or day out in Northampton.

The central Northampton location also makes it easy to combine a visit with dinner, drinks or exploring the town centre. With restaurants, cafés and other attractions within walking distance, you can make an evening at Royal & Derngate part of a wider trip rather than simply attending a performance.

For visitors travelling from Bedford, Royal & Derngate provides a worthwhile option for live entertainment beyond the local area, without having to travel into London. Whether you enjoy theatre, comedy, music, dance, cinema or family entertainment, its constantly changing programme means there is plenty to discover throughout the year.
