John Bunyan Museum tells the fascinating story of Bedford’s most famous historical figure, John Bunyan, the 17th-century preacher and author of The Pilgrim’s Progress. Located on Mill Street alongside Bunyan Meeting, it explores his life, beliefs, imprisonment and the world in which he lived.
The museum brings Bunyan’s story to life through recreated scenes, historic objects, audio and interactive displays. Visitors can see items associated with Bunyan and discover how his experiences in Bedford influenced his writing, including the internationally famous The Pilgrim’s Progress.
It is also a good choice for families, with self-led trails, quizzes and interactive elements helping younger visitors engage with the story. The museum regularly runs family activities and workshops during school holidays, making it more accessible than a traditional history museum.
A visit can easily be combined with Bunyan Meeting itself, the historic church where Bunyan was minister from 1671 until his death. The church contains striking stained-glass windows and bronze doors depicting scenes from The Pilgrim’s Progress, adding another dimension to the story.
For visitors interested in Bedford’s history, literature or unusual local stories, the John Bunyan Museum is well worth visiting. Admission is free, and its central location makes it easy to combine with the town centre, St Paul’s Square, the High Street and other nearby attractions.
