Bedford Castle Mound

Bedford Castle Mound is the surviving earthwork of Bedford’s medieval Norman castle. What looks today like a large grassy hill was once the raised centre of a powerful medieval fortress, built overlooking the River Great Ouse. The original castle was much larger, but most of it was demolished in the 13th century, leaving the mound as one of the clearest reminders of medieval Bedford.

The mound is particularly interesting because there is very little of the original castle left above ground. Climbing to the top gives you an idea of how the castle’s elevated position would have helped its occupants overlook the surrounding town and river.

The castle has a fascinating history, including the famous siege of 1224, when King Henry III besieged Bedford Castle for eight weeks before capturing it from the forces of Falkes de Bréauté. Following the siege, the castle was largely dismantled, explaining why visitors today won’t find medieval towers or walls standing on the site.

Today, the mound provides a pleasant viewpoint over Bedford and is surrounded by historic and riverside attractions. It is close to Castle Bailey Gardens, the River Great Ouse and The Higgins Bedford, making it easy to include as part of a walk around the town centre.

There is no admission charge, and the mound doesn’t take long to explore, but it is worth visiting for the history and for the chance to stand on the remains of one of Bedford’s most important medieval landmarks. Don’t expect a restored castle — the mound itself is the surviving feature.
