Why Visit

The Panacea Museum is one of Bedford’s more unusual hidden gems, telling the fascinating story of the Panacea Society, a Christian community formed in the early 20th century. The society established its own community and “Garden of Eden” in Bedford, and the museum explores its beliefs, daily life and extraordinary history.

The museum is spread across several Victorian buildings that once formed the society’s headquarters, including the beautifully preserved Castleside house. Inside, visitors can discover original objects, photographs, documents and displays that bring the story of the community and its members to life.

One of the most intriguing parts of the story is the society’s connection with Joanna Southcott’s mysterious box of prophecies. Members believed that 24 bishops would eventually come to Bedford to open it, and the museum explains how this unusual belief influenced the community and its activities.

The museum’s gardens are another highlight, offering a peaceful green space in the centre of Bedford. There is also a small tea room serving drinks, cakes and snacks, making it easy to combine the museum with a relaxing break.

Entry is free, and the museum offers family trails, colouring and wooden toys, making it accessible to younger visitors as well as adults. For anyone interested in local history, unusual stories, Victorian life or simply discovering somewhere different, the Panacea Museum offers a genuinely fascinating Bedford experience.
